A Neuralink, startup de chips cerebrais do bilionário Elon Musk, anunciou nesta terça-feira (19) que vai começar o primeiro teste de seu implante em seres humanos. A empresa liberou um formulário para receber candidaturas de pacientes com paralisia.
Em um comunicado, a Neuralink afirmou ter recebido a aprovação de um conselho independente para começar a recrutar interessados no teste. Em maio, a Agência de Alimentos e Medicamentos (FDA, na sigla em inglês) já tinha autorizado os estudos.
Podem se candidatar as pessoas com paralisia decorrente de lesão da medula espinhal cervical ou esclerose lateral amiotrófica, que tenham mais de 22 anos e que recebam o suporte de um cuidador.
Inicialmente, a meta é permitir que pacientes controlem um teclado de computador usando os pensamentos.
A startup de Musk diz que o objetivo do estudo é testar a segurança e a eficácia do chip, criado para permitir que dispositivos externos sejam controlados com o pensamento, e do robô “cirurgião”.
“O robô R1 será usado para colocar cirurgicamente os fios ultrafinos e flexíveis do implante N1 em uma região do cérebro que controla a intenção do movimento”, afirmou a Neuralink.
