Descoberta sobre maior lua de Saturno reduz esperança de encontrar vida no Sistema Solar

Um grupo internacional de pesquisadores pode ter acabado com a última esperança de encontrar vida extraterrestre no Sistema Solar. Segundo eles, a maior lua de Saturno, Titã, que abriga um oceano de água líquida subterrâneo, é inabitável.

  • Acredita-se que muitos dos satélite dos gigantes gasosos possuem oceanos de água líquida abaixo da sua superfície;
  • Dessa forma, eles acabam se tornando alvo das buscas por vida fora do planeta Terra;
  • Titã, a maior lua de Saturno, provavelmente é uma das candidatas mais fortes, devido à sua superfície rica em compostos orgânicos;
  • No entanto, uma nova pesquisa revelou que talvez ela não seja tão habitável assim.

Encontrar vida ou condições que a tornem possível nas luas do Sistema Solar é uma área de interesse para muitos cientistas e agências espaciais governamentais, como a NASA. Isso porque se acredita que muitos desses mundos abriguem oceanos de água líquida abaixo de suas superfícies. Em Titã, por exemplo, estima-se que a quantidade de água seja 12 vezes maior que o volume dos oceanos da Terra.

A vida como a conhecemos aqui na Terra precisa de água como solvente, por isso planetas e luas com muita água são de interesse quando se procura vida extraterrestre.

No novo estudo, publicado na revista Astrobiology, os pesquisadores usaram dados de crateras de impacto para avaliar a possibilidade de existir vida em Titã com base na quantidade de moléculas orgânicas que poderiam ser transferidas da superfície para o oceano subterrâneo.

Quando cometas colidem com a superfície rica em compostos orgânicos da lua Titã, ela acaba criando piscinas de água líquida que se misturam com o material orgânico da crosta. O derretimento causado pelo impacto acaba sendo mais denso que o gelo e afunda provavelmente até o oceano subterrâneo do satélite.

Assim, foram analisadas as taxas de impacto na lua para ser possível determinar quantos cometas de diferentes tamanhos atingiram a superfície de Titã por ano. Dessa forma, os pesquisadores puderam determinar quanto de matéria orgânica foi parar no oceano subterrâneo.

Essa investigação revelou que a quantidade de moléculas orgânicas que vão para o oceano de Titã é muito baixa e insuficiente para desencadear a formação de vida na lua. Cerca de apenas 7,5 mil quilos por ano de glicina, o aminoácido mais simples e que constitui as proteínas da vida, vão parar abaixo da crosta congelada do satélite – massa equivalente a de um elefante.

Um elefante por ano de glicina num oceano 12 vezes o volume dos oceanos da Terra não é suficiente para sustentar a vida. No passado, as pessoas muitas vezes presumiam que água era igual a vida, mas negligenciavam o fato de que a vida necessita de outros elementos, em particular o carbono.

Se o oceano de Titã não é habitável, existem poucas chances de que os oceanos das outras luas geladas sejam habitáveis. Isso porque o maior satélite de Saturno é o que possui mais compostos orgânicos em sua superfície. 

No entanto, ainda há muito para descobrir sobre Titã, principalmente sobre a sua composição. Assim, a missão Dragonfly, que irá enviar um helicóptero para superfície da lua em 2028, poderá revelar mais sobre a química pré-biótica e como os compostos orgânicos se formaram naquele intrigante mundo.
