Erupção vulcânica iminente ameaça cidade na Islândia

Grindavik, cidade na Islândia com quatro mil habitantes, está à beira da devastação iminente devido a uma possível erupção vulcânica, alertaram especialistas. Localizada nas proximidades da capital Reykjavik, Grindavik poderia sofrer danos graves em questão de horas ou dias, de acordo com informações do jornal The Guardian.

A intensa atividade sísmica levou ao fechamento da famosa Blue Lagoon, conhecida por suas termas geotérmicas e hotéis de luxo, como medida de precaução. O Departamento de Proteção Civil e Gerenciamento de Emergências anunciou o estado de emergência, destacando a atividade sísmica em Sundhnjukagigar, ao norte de Grindavik.

O Instituto Meteorológico da Islândia alertou sobre a possibilidade de uma erupção nos próximos dias, aumentando a preocupação. Grindavik, localizada a aproximadamente três quilômetros a sudoeste do epicentro sísmico, ativou planos de evacuação em preparação para um possível evento.

Dois terremotos substanciais, com magnitude de 5,2 ao norte de Grindavik, foram sentidos até a capital, Reykjavik, e ao longo da costa sul do país, causando tremores e danos generalizados. A polícia islandesa fechou uma rodovia norte-sul para Grindavik devido a danos causados pelos terremotos.

Desde o final de outubro, a península de Reykjanes enfrentou 24 mil tremores. O acúmulo de magma subterrâneo a uma profundidade de aproximadamente cinco quilômetros levanta preocupações sobre uma possível erupção vulcânica, caso alcance a superfície.

Embora o Instituto Meteorológico da Islândia sugira que uma erupção seja mais provável em vários dias do que horas, a zona de impacto potencial está sendo monitorada de perto. A área sísmica mais ativa não está direcionada para Grindavik, mas medidas preventivas estão em vigor.

Após séculos de dormência, a península de Reykjanes testemunhou três erupções desde 2021, todas em locais remotos, sem ameaçar infraestrutura ou áreas povoadas. A usina geotérmica de Svartsengi também implementou planos de contingência para proteger instalações e força de trabalho em caso de erupção.

Com 33 sistemas vulcânicos ativos, a Islândia, apelidada de “Terra do Fogo e do Gelo”, ostenta o maior número na Europa, tornando esses eventos naturais uma parte intrínseca da vida islandesa.
