Com 1,90 metro de altura, a cozinheira americana Julia Child (1912-2004) é um personagem tão interessante que já foi tema de três produções biográficas: o filme “Julie & Julia”, que em 2009 teve Meryl Streep no papel principal, e outras duas atrações com o título de “Julia”, ambas lançadas em 2022 —um documentário produzido pela CNN e uma série da HBO Max, que chega agora à segunda temporada.
Julia Child é considerada a pioneira dos programas de receitas como os conhecemos hoje, quer dizer, mais ou menos como os conhecemos hoje.
Estabanada e carismática, ela iniciou sua carreira televisiva nos anos 1960, impulsionada pelo sucesso do livro “Mastering the Art of French Cooking”, (“Dominando a Arte da Cozinha Francesa”, em tradução livre). Child ensinava as americanas não só aquilo que aprendeu no Le Cordon Bleu (ela se formou na mais prestigiada escola francesa de gastronomia) mas também pratos simples —sempre de forma quase totalmente improvisada, entremeando técnicas e ingredientes com comentários engraçados e pequenos acidentes, transmitidos ao vivo, ao longo da feitura das receitas.
A segunda temporada da produção chega ao serviço de streaming nesta quinta-feira (16), trazendo mudanças e um novo olhar. Isso porque, no fim da primeira temporada, a culinarista sofre com baixa confiança e arrisca desistir de seu programa “The French Chef”. Para voltar, ela exige uma pausa.
“Essa temporada é sobre mudança e vai focar em como ela lida com o sucesso e como isso muda sua percepção de mundo. Explorar as diferentes contradições, entre a vida dela e o contexto social, foi uma maneira de dramatizar a série e sua vida”, conta Daniel Goldfarb, um dos criadores da série, ao F5.
Ela própria afirmou certa vez que aprendeu a cozinhar tarde, aos 32 anos. O novo talento desabrochou quando Julia se mudou para a França com o marido (e grande incentivador de sua carreira na TV), diplomata americano. Foi durante o período no país que ela começou a levar a culinária a sério, encantou-se com os ingredientes frescos que via em feiras e mercados e se apaixonou pela gastronomia francesa.
O também criador Chris Keyser adianta que o recém-adquirido reconhecimento de Julia moldou o futuro de seu relacionamento com o marido e família. Todas as mudanças —internas e externas— vão ser exploradas na nova leva de episódios.
“Estamos em 1965 e, mesmo que os eventos políticos não sejam profundamente abordados na série, são grandes mudanças nos Estados Unidos e, para nós, essa dualidade entre o mundo interior dela e o mundo exterior desperta dois lados: você está a favor das mudanças ou contra elas?”, afirma ele. “Como toda história, as ações dos personagens determinam para onde eles vão.”
Mesmo em muitos aspectos sendo considerada precursora, usando da determinação para alcançar o sucesso, em outros fica explícito o preconceito inerente de Julia, como por exemplo contra a comunidade gay. Após perder um amigo próximo para a Aids, a ex-chef se engajou na conscientização sobre o assunto.
Para a dupla, a atuação de Sarah é o que difere a série de outras adaptações sobre a história da culinarista. A atriz personifica (não imita, de acordo com eles) a trajetória pessoal da personagem aos olhos da câmera, adaptando a atuação de um jeito não óbvio. “Às vezes, ela vai além do que pensamos no roteiro ou vai por um caminho completamente diferente, é surpreendente”, diz Goldfarb.
