Fundada em 1994 somente como uma loja de livros na internet, a Amazon se tornou uma gigante da tecnologia sob o comando de seu fundador Jeff Bezos. Foi ele quem decidiu batizar a empresa em referência à região, mais especificamente ao rio Amazonas.
O nome foi escolhido após Bezos buscar palavras com a letra “A” no dicionário e ver que “Amazon” era descrito como o “maior rio da Terra”, escreveu Brad Stone, autor do livro “A Loja de Tudo: Jeff Bezos e a era da Amazon”.
“Este não é apenas o maior rio do mundo, é muitas vezes maior que o maior rio seguinte. Ele destrói todos os outros rios”, disse Bezos, segundo o autor do livro.
“Isso se conectou instantaneamente com sua visão de curto prazo da empresa como a ‘maior livraria da Terra'”, diz Stone, no livro.

Amazon substituiu Cadabra
A escolha por Amazon fez a empresa abandonar o nome que usava inicialmente: Cadabra, referência à palavra “abracadabra”. Segundo o Business Insider, um antigo advogado alegava que a referência era muito obscura e, muitas vezes, a palavra era confundida com “cadáver”.
Antes de escolher Amazon.com, Bezos cogitou usar outros nomes, como Awake.com e Browse.com. Os domínios foram comprados pelo empresário e até hoje redirecionam usuários à página da loja.

Esta disputa foi vencida pela Amazon em 2019, depois que os países não conseguiram chegar a um acordo com a Amazon, e a Corporação Global da Internet para Atribuição de Nomes e Números (ICANN) decidiu prosseguir com o pedido da empresa.
Hoje, o site da ICANN informa que domínio “.amazon” é operado desde 19 de dezembro de 2019 pela Amazon Registry Services, subsidiária da companhia de Bezos.
