“Eu amo o Brasil”, diz Ricky Martin, 52, quase que de imediato ao ouvir que o jornalista é brasileiro. O porto-riquenho, que arrasa corações no país desde que, aos 12 anos, se juntou ao grupo Menudo —que fez um inusitado e estrondoso sucesso por aqui nos anos 1980— e foi um dos pioneiros do pop latino em inglês, ainda no final dos anos 1990, quando colocou “Livin’ La Vida Loca” no topo das paradas, mais recentemente e embora de forma bissexta, vem se reinventando como ator.

Após receber uma indicação ao Emmy de ator coadjuvante por sua participação em “American Crime Story: O Assassinato de Gianni Versace” (2018), ele volta ao mundo dos ricaços da Flórida em seu mais recente projeto, “Palm Royale”, série que estreia na Apple TV+ no próximo dia 20. Desta vez, a ação se passa na Palm Beach de 1969, mas, assim como quando viveu o boy toy do estilista italiano radicado em Miami, seu físico é bastante explorado.

“Estou pelado em metade da série, o que posso fazer?”, brinca ele, que aparece de sunga e shortinho, com o peitoral à mostra, em boa parte das cenas. “Eu fiquei igual um louco fazendo flexões antes de cada cena; fiquei sem dormir e sem comer por dois dias antes de rodar”, conta, aos risos, antes de assumir: “Estou exagerando”.

Hoje um cinquentão (não tem quem diga), ele diz que já passou da fase de ligar para o que acham de sua figura. “Tenho minhas inseguranças, mas chega um momento em que você precisa superar”, avalia. “Você entra de roupão no set e depois simplesmente esquece. Este é o meu corpo, vamos nessa.”

E ele ainda tem uma importante cena de sexo, o que torna tudo ainda mais íntimo. “Não é fácil, mas no final você se diverte”, conta. “Acho que é como ir a uma praia nudista. Nunca estive em uma, mas imagino que você fique nervoso no começo e depois passa. Você deixa de ligar. Quando termina, você nem quer mais vestir suas roupas de volta (risos).”

Na trama, Ricky Martin interpreta Robert Diaz, um sujeito bastante dúbio. É um aproveitador? É um cara de bom coração? “Nossa, isso aqui é bem obscuro, mas também divertido”, lembra ele de ter pensado na primeira vez que leu o material. “Isso é muito contraditório? Foi assim que me senti.”

Robert é garçom no Palm Royale, o clube de elite frequentado pelas dondocas da cidade, mas logo descobre-se que também tinha algum tipo de relação com Norma Dellacorte (Carol Burnett), a socialite que promovia a festa mais aguardada do ano. Com Norma em estado vegetativo em uma casa de repouso, ele vai ser a pedra no sapato de Maxine (Kristen Wiig), a nora que achava que a herança da sogra rica estava no papo.

Mais adiante, descobre-se que Robert é gay, e vive sua sexualidade dentro do armário —como, aliás, era comum à época. Ricky, que tornou pública sua homossexualidade em 2010, diz que entende bem os processos pelos quais seu personagem passa.

“Tive que confrontar minha identidade sexual por um longo período, porque tinha a necessidade de ser aceito, e ser eu mesmo não era uma opção, porque achava que seria rejeitado pelo público e pela mídia”, lembra. “Aí um dia eu disse: ‘Já é suficiente’. Eu tinha virado pai e pensei que era hora de superar isso e de aceitar. E tem sido maravilhoso desde então. Descobri que a maioria dos meus medos estava na minha cabeça.”

“Acho que isso é algo que também levo para ‘Palm Royale’, porque Robert também está lutando contra isso”, continua. “E não importa a época, não importa o país em que você vive, isso é algo que está impresso nos nossos sistemas por causa das informações que recebemos. É algo com que muitos homens e mulheres estão lidando neste momento e tenho esperança de que a série lance uma luz sobre essa questão social.”

Ao comparar a atuação com a música, Ricky diz que, para ele, interpretar outra pessoa é como uma “sessão de psicanálise”. “[Quando estou atuando,] eu me faço muitas perguntas como ser humano, porque aprendi que um ator não pode mentir”, diz. “Não digo que sou um mentiroso quando canto, mas fico fascinado com a possibilidade de estar em contato com as minhas emoções, ser cru e honesto enquanto vivo esses momentos.”

“Acho que é algo que requer muita prática e coragem”, avalia. “Não digo que sou o melhor nisso, mas estou trabalhando para chegar lá. Aos poucos vou achando as ferramentas para alcançar um pouco de excelência.”

Ele admite que ainda se sente nervoso ao contracenar com grandes nomes do cinema e da televisão. “Quando entrei no set ainda fiquei embasbacado por estar trabalhando com tantas lendas, mas esse é um sentimento incrível”, afirma ele, que diz ter ido gravar com a disposição de um aprendiz. “No momento em que você acha que já sabe de tudo, você morreu.”
