Que “Titanic” é um dos maiores filmes da história, não há dúvidas… Mas sempre houve um grande debate acerca de uma coisa: Jack poderia ter sobrevivido? Nos 25 anos desse clássico do cinema, James Cameron resolveu tirar a dúvida de vez. O cineasta contou com a ajuda de cientistas para descobrir essa resposta e recriar um dos emblemáticos momentos finais do longa.
Nesta quinta-feira (2), o “Good Morning America” divulgou um trecho inédito do especial “Titanic: 25 Years Later With James Cameron”, que será exibido pelo National Geographic. Na produção, Cameron refez a cena em que Rose (Kate Winslet) sobe numa porta flutuante e consegue se salvar do naufrágio, ao passo que Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio) fica no mar e acaba morrendo congelado. Com a ajuda de especialistas e dois dublês, o diretor testou quatro possibilidades diferentes para ver se o galã poderia ter escapado da morte subindo na porta com a amada.
No primeiro cenário, eles testaram como seria se Jack simplesmente subisse na madeira. “Jack e Rose conseguem subir na madeira, mas agora ambos estão submersos em níveis perigosos de água congelante”, observou o diretor, reconhecendo que o personagem poderia boiar, mas dificilmente sairia vivo. Na sequência, eles consideraram uma posição em que o casal conseguiria elevar a parte superior do seu corpo. “Fora da água, o tremor violento [do seu corpo] o estava ajudando. Projetando ele para fora, ele poderia ter resistido por muito tempo. Tipo, horas”, pontuou o diretor.
Se os protagonistas continuassem assim, de modo a proteger seus órgãos vitais, eles aumentariam suas chances de sobreviver. Contudo, foi necessário considerar que os dublês não estavam tão exaustos quanto os personagens. Mas Cameron também recriou alguns momentos de tensão antes da cena final, como a troca de socos entre Jack e outro homem que tentou usar Rose para boiar no mar. Um outro cenário testado – que não aconteceu no longa – mostrou como seria se Rose tivesse dado um colete salva-vidas para aumentar a proteção de Jack.
“Ele está estabilizado. Ele entrou num lugar em que, se nós tivéssemos imaginado isso, ele poderia sobreviver até o barco salva-vidas chegar lá”, declarou o cineasta. Por fim, ao bater o martelo, James chegou a uma conclusão não tão conclusiva assim… Mas admitiu que Jack poderia, sim, escapar da morte. “Jack poderia ter sobrevivido, mas são muitas variáveis. Eu acho que o processo de pensamento dele foi: ‘Eu não vou fazer nada que a coloque em risco’. E isso é 100% do personagem”, reconheceu. Já faz 84 anos… Mas parece o fim da discussão.

Em dezembro, a própria Kate Winslet falou sobre o assunto em entrevista ao podcast “Happy Sad Confused”. Para a intérprete de Rose, é improvável que Jack poderia sobreviver mesmo que subisse na porta. “Eu tenho que ser honesta: eu, na verdade, não acredito que nós sobreviveríamos se os dois estivessem naquela porta. Eu acho que ele caberia lá, mas ela teria virado e não seria uma ideia sustentável… Sim, ele caberia naquela porta, mas não teria ficado flutuando. Não ficaria”, opinou ela.
Ciência e palpites à parte, será que o filme teria tido tamanha importância se o final fosse diferente? Fato é que, enquanto não podemos mudar a história, ela seguirá memorável no coração dos milhões de espectadores mundo afora. O especial “Titanic: 25 Years Later With James Cameron” vai ao ar no próximo domingo (5), no National Geographic, e será disponibilizado posteriormente no Hulu. Para celebrar os 25 anos do lançamento e da vitória do Oscar de “Melhor Filme”, “Titanic” também voltará aos cinemas mais uma vez ainda neste mês.
