Uma organização de bem-estar animal disse nesta quinta-feira (9) que planeja pedir a uma agência do governo dos Estados Unidos para investigar a Neuralink, empresa de implantes cerebrais de Elon Musk, sobre suspeita de que, segundo o grupo, a companhia tenha transportado ilegalmente patógenos perigosos.

O Comitê de Médicos para Medicina Responsável (PCRM) disse em uma carta ao Departamento de Transportes dos EUA, que obteve emails e outros documentos que sugerem embalagens e movimentações inseguras de implantes removidos de cérebros de macacos.
Esses equipamentos podem ter transmitido doenças infecciosas, violando a lei federal norte-americana, disse o PCRM.
A carta afirma que registros que o grupo obteve mostram casos de patógenos, como estafilococos resistentes a antibióticos e vírus da herpes tipo B, que podem ter sido transportados sem medidas de contenção adequadas.

Os incidentes que envolveram possíveis violações dos regulamentos de transporte de materiais perigosos aconteceram em 2019, quando a Neuralink contou com a Universidade da Califórnia para ajudar a realizar seus experimentos com primatas, de acordo com os documentos citados pelo comitê.
Embora a parceria da Neuralink com a UC tenha terminado em 2020, o PCRM disse que a empresa continua a empregar o neurocirurgião que supervisionou os experimentos e outros funcionários envolvidos também podem ainda estar empregados.
Representantes da Neuralink, incluindo Musk, e do Departamento de Transportes não comentaram o assunto. Um porta-voz da UC disse apenas que a universidade cumpre todos os regulamentos de risco biológico e de segurança de laboratório.
O PCRM, que se opõe ao uso de animais em pesquisas médicas, não identificou nenhum dano como resultado desses incidentes, mas disse que as ações da Neuralink “podem representar um risco sério e contínuo à saúde pública”.
O grupo disse que também encontrou casos que parecem descrever funcionários da UC pedindo treinamento imediato de risco biológico para funcionários da Neuralink após incidentes que causaram preocupações de contaminação.
Em uma ocasião, em abril de 2019, um funcionário escreveu em um email afirmando que o centro de primatas da universidade está “em risco” de “hardware contaminado por macacos”.
“Esta é uma exposição para qualquer um que entre em contato com o hardware explantado contaminado e estamos fazendo um grande alarde sobre isso porque estamos preocupados com a segurança humana”, escreveu o funcionário, cujo nome foi retirado dos registros.
Durante sua parceria com a UC Davis, a Neuralink ficou frustrada com o “ritmo lento” dos testes em primatas, disseram funcionários e ex-funcionários da empresa à Reuters, e desde então construiu extensas instalações internas de testes em animais.
A empresa, no entanto, perdeu os prazos estabelecidos por Musk para iniciar testes em humanos. A pressão sobre a equipe de pesquisadores para progredir contribuiu para erros que afetaram alguns experimentos, informou.
